Science from the Seychelles - WELCOME!

ImageOne of the most important and exciting missions of the Living Oceans Foundation is education and outreach. Although nearly three-quarters of the Earth’s surface is water, the public at large knows so little about the importance of that huge expanse to mankind. We seek to improve public knowledge about our living oceans.

As part of a marine research project (Republic of Seychelles), in partnership with the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Coastal Research Unit-CCRU), the Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology (SCMRT), and the Trident Trust / Education Business Group (West of England), the Living Oceans Foundation provided daily reports of scientific observations and operational activities over a three week period in January 2005.

Focussing on the southern Seychelles Islands (Indian Ocean), based on the vessel ‘Golden Shadow’, the project scientists provided curriculum relevant information direct to this web-site via a near-real-time reporting process.

The educational component to this research project had the following objectives:

• Support the Living Oceans Foundation ‘Science without Borders’ Education and Outreach theme.

• Provide ‘real-life’ scientific information of direct benefit to science curricula.

• Raise marine environmental awareness within schools.

• Motivate and enthuse young people about the exciting and rewarding careers available through the pursuit of a science orientated education.

• Promote the formation of international school links.

The Expedition!

Daily reports were kept up to date throughout the ‘field-phase’ of the expedition (January 10th 2005 - January 28th 2005).

The daily reports appear on the following pages:

In order for the science team to achieve their aims and objectives, they must complete certain tasks. These tasks must be carried out using pre-determined methods, in a methodical manner, so that they support the overall goals of the science plan. Read More ...

This page will give you access to interesting facts about the daily operation of The Golden Shadow. You'll be able to see where the ship has travelled, at what speeds, and other operational details. These pages were updated daily throughout the field phase of the expedition between the 10th - 28th January 2005. Read More ...

Imagine spotting a whale, or observing dolphins bow-riding the Golden Shadow! What about some of the unexpected sights the SCUBA team observed when entering the underwater home of all those marine species! Read More ...

Fifteen schools have been privileged with direct email access with the Golden Shadow - during the expedition pupils from these 15 schools will be challenging the scientists and crew of the Golden Shadow, with daily questions. Read More ...
